Teen Read Week™ is a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults. It is an opportunity for adults to encourage teens to read “for the fun of it.”
Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! With so many options for entertainment, not to mention the increased amount of schoolwork in the teen years, busy and distracted teens overlook reading for pleasure—Teen Read Week aims to remind teens that reading is fun, free, and can be done anywhere, anytime. Research shows that teens who read for fun score significantly higher on reading tests.
It’s also a great chance to let your school or your public library communities know how important teen services are! Let teens know the possibilities that exist within your doors, and within the covers of books.
More than 4,600 school and public libraries registered to participate in Teen Read Week this year. To see what’s happening in your area, please visit our Events page!
