If you've been following our #GetLibraryCarded Campaign on social media for Library Card Sign-up Month, you might have noticed the photos of awesome comic creators posing with their library cards. That's thanks to the work the American Library Association's Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT), who organized the effort.
So far, participating creators include Barbara Perez Marquez, writer of The Cardboard Kingdom (Knopf), writer/artist Jimmy Palmiotti (Harley Quinn, Marvel Knights, Painkiller Jane), writer Scott Snyder (Batman, Justice League, and American Vampire), artist/editor Christina "Steenz" Stewart (Archival Quality, Rolled & Told), writer David F. Walker (Bitter Root, Writer of Naomi, Luke Cage), cartoonist Sophie Yanow (The Contradictions), writer Chip Zdarsky, (Spider-Man: Life Story, White Trees, Daredevil).
And there are many more to come. The Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table will be featuring one comic creator every day for the entire month of September!
GNCRT is committed to public outreach and advocacy around comics and graphic novels and supporting library staff in all aspects of engaging with graphic novels. According to their press release about the project, the relationship between comic creators and libraries is a mutually beneficial one. Both support literacy, intellectual freedom, and creative expression. Additionally, libraries make up a large percentage of trade paperback and graphic novel sales across publishers and genres, which gets creators’ books into more readers’ hands; likewise, creators can utilize library facilities for work or play, just like anyone with a library card can.
Want to participate? We encourage all libraries and patrons to join in! Snap a picture with your library card and post it to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #GetLibraryCarded, and you'll be automatically entered in a drawing to win a $100 Visa gift card! The promotion begins Sunday, September 1 at noon CT and ends Sunday, September 22 at noon CT. Check our Library Card Sign-up Month page for details.
