A close-knit group

Every once in a while, we get a note from a reader who tells us about how and why they love their library, and the unique things that go on at their local branch. This submission is from Ginger, a teacher at the Dewey International Studies School in St. Louis, MO. Her local library participates in a knitting program that benefits local students. This is just an example of the awesome things that libraries and librarians do throughout this country every day. Her story follows below:

"My name is Ginger, and I am a teacher at the Dewey International Studies School in St. Louis. I love the library! I frequently visit the Spencer Road Branch Library in the St. Charles City-County Library District in Missouri. It was there that I discovered the Chemo Caps group and decided to join.

Chemo Caps is a regular program offered at the St. Charles City-County Library that allows space for people who love to knit and crochet to meet together and create. They often donate caps to cancer patients and others in need. The Chemo Caps participants have gotten to know each other well during our hours of knitting and crocheting. We enjoy the time we spend together and share each other’s lives. When I'm not at school, I meet my friends at Chemo Caps to knit and chat.

So when I talked about my students at the Dewey School, my friends from the Chemo Caps really came through for them. At Dewey, over 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. There is no extra money to spare. They have been so kind to donate hats and scarves to my school. The ladies have also donated school supplies to my class the last couple of years.

The friendships that I have made through Chemo Caps have enhanced my life and helped me feel like part of a community that cares. I also love the library for other reasons. I cannot say enough good stuff about the Spencer Road Library. I am not able to afford internet at my house so I use the library all year as a place where I can bring my laptop and get school work done in a very quiet and pleasant atmosphere. I also love being able to reserve books online and pick them up at the drive-through. Since I have a long commute every day, it makes my life a lot easier to have this service provided by the library.

Thank you to the St. Charles City-County Library!"
